Saint Mary’s Offers Innovative Low-Dose Radiation Therapy for Osteoarthritis

December 18, 2025

Saint Mary’s is proud to offer a new, noninvasive treatment option for individuals suffering from moderate to severe osteoarthritis: Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT). This non-surgical approach helps patients manage chronic joint pain while improving mobility and delaying, or even avoiding, surgery.

While LDRT remains underutilized in the United States, it has been safely and effectively used for more than a century in Europe and other parts of the world. The treatment involves delivering small, targeted doses of radiation to affected joints—far lower than those used for cancer treatment—minimizing the risk of side effects.

LDRT is ideal for adult patients over 40 who:

  • Have not found relief from physical therapy or medications
  • Are not candidates for joint replacement
  • Want to postpone or avoid surgery
  • Seek improved mobility and reduced pain
  • Commonly treated areas include the knees, hands, shoulders, and hips.

“This therapy offers a promising option for patients who are either not ready for surgery or are not surgical candidates,” said Dr. Sam Hughes, Radiation Oncologist at Saint Mary’s. “It’s a safe way to reduce pain and regain daily function.”

The Benefits of LDRT:

  • Noninvasive and low risk
  • Can improve joint function and mobility
  • Helps manage pain when other treatments fall short

How It Works

LDRT at Saint Mary’s is provided by a specialized care team trained in delivering low-dose radiation for non-cancerous conditions. Treatments are brief and outpatient-based, typically delivered over the course of several sessions.

A Collaborative Approach to Care

Dr. Hughes works closely with referring physicians to determine eligibility and coordinate care. Referring providers will be kept informed throughout the process to ensure seamless care continuity.

If you or a loved one is experiencing persistent joint pain despite standard treatments, ask your provider if LDRT may be right for you.
