Saint Mary’s Regional Health System proudly announces the graduation of the first three participants in the hospital’s TruMont Nurse Residency Program, a structured initiative designed to support newly licensed nurses as they transition into clinical practice. This milestone reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to developing confident, capable nurses who are equipped to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to patients across the River Valley.
The program’s first graduates include Sydney Keaton, a nurse in the Emergency Department, along with London and Olivia Barnes, who both serve in the Intensive Care Unit. Each nurse completed a capstone project that addressed current challenges in patient care and collaborated with clinical mentors and hospital leadership throughout the process.
Sydney Keaton partnered with LaShanda Head, RN, to research the use of hemostatic agents in emergency settings, with a particular focus on a product known as TraumaGel. “When I first stepped into the ER, I knew that’s where I was meant to be,” said Keaton. “My capstone project allowed me to explore trauma care in depth. I researched different methods for stopping hemorrhaging, including communication with professionals at the company that developed TraumaGel. The experience shaped how I approach every shift and deepened my understanding of how we can save lives quickly and effectively.”
London and Olivia Barnes worked together on a quality improvement initiative called “Stop the CAUTI,” which focused on reducing catheter-associated urinary tract infections in the ICU. Their project was a collaboration with the hospital’s multidisciplinary CAUTI team, including Director of ICU Lauryn Gore, Madison Chiolino, and other nursing and quality leaders.
“We talked with Lauryn about real problems facing ICU patients, and it was eye-opening to realize how long foley catheters can remain in place,” said London. “Researching CAUTI prevention reminded us how important it is to keep infection prevention at the forefront of care. We were able to share that message with our fellow nurses in a meaningful way.”
Each graduate worked closely with a preceptor who helped guide their clinical development. “The residency allowed me to grow in both skills and confidence,” said Keaton. “Our team works together like a family. You’re never alone when you step into a room—someone is always behind you, ready to help.”
London echoed that support. “The ICU can feel intimidating for a new graduate, but the team at Saint Mary’s is welcoming, knowledgeable and always ready to teach. I couldn’t have asked for a better environment to begin my career.”
The TruMont Nurse Residency Program will continue to serve as a vital tool for recruiting and retaining nurses, while also enhancing the patient experience. Through education, mentorship and hands-on learning, the program reflects Saint Mary’s mission of making communities healthier® and prepares nurses to thrive in a fast-paced, team-driven environment.
