A Journey of Courage: Honoring National Cancer Survivors Day
June 1, 2025

By Dr. Sam Hughes, Radiation Oncologist at Saint Mary’s
Every year, on National Cancer Survivors Day, we pause to celebrate the incredible strength, resilience and hope of those who have faced cancer. This day is a tribute to survivors—those who have completed their treatment and those still walking this challenging path. At Saint Mary’s, we are honored to stand alongside our patients, their families and our community in this journey, offering not just medical expertise but also compassion, support and hope.
Cancer is a word that changes lives in an instant. For those currently navigating treatment, each day brings its own battles—physical, emotional and mental. To you, I want to say: your courage inspires us all. Every step you take, every moment you push forward, is a testament to the human spirit’s unbreakable resolve. And to our survivors, who have crossed the finish line of treatment, your stories of triumph light the way for others. You may best be described as “thrivers,” not just survivors.
At Saint Mary’s, we are more than a medical facility—we are a family dedicated to walking with you every step of the way. Our team of oncologists, nurses, therapists and support staff is committed to providing compassionate care tailored to your unique needs. From radiation therapies, like the precision-guided treatments I oversee, to chemotherapy and integrative services, we strive to treat the whole person, not just the disease. Our cancer care program includes:
- Personalized Treatment Plans: We use the latest technology to target cancer with precision, minimizing side effects and maximizing outcomes.
- Emotional and Spiritual Care: Our counseling services offer a safe space to process emotions, share experiences and find strength in community.
To every "thriver" and every fighter: you are not alone. Your journey is our journey, and together, we can face anything. At Saint Mary’s, we believe in the power of hope, the strength of community and the promise of tomorrow. Here’s to celebrating life, resilience and the unbreakable spirit of those affected by cancer.
