Student Volunteer Program
Are you a student interested in a medical field? Each summer, high school and college students (age 16 and older) may apply to participate in Saint Mary’s Student Volunteer summer program. Eligible applicants interested in pursing medical careers are urged to apply. You may pick up a printed 2018 brochure and application at our switchboard or download it here. Applications are available and accepted in late spring. Approved applicants will be notified.
Student volunteer participants must submit to drug screening prior to service, as well as complete a six-hour orientation covering HIPAA patient-privacy laws, infection control, professional conduct, and customer service. They are also trained and certified to transport patients by wheelchair.
As with adult volunteers, student volunteers work in 4-hour shifts, performing duties such as escorting patients and guests, wheelchair escort of discharged patients, materials and lab transport, and department-specific duties. At the end of the summer, they are awarded a certificate for the number of hours contributed, and are honored with an appreciation celebration. College students over age 18 may also choose to volunteer during the school year.
