This summer, students interested in pursuing a career in a medical field can apply to participate in Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center’s Junior Volunteer program. High school and college students between the ages of 16 and 19 are invited to submit an application which can be obtained from Saint Mary’s Switchboard or by visiting the Saint Mary’s website at www.saintmarysregional.com. As many as 20 students will be selected to participate. The program begins with orientation on Mon. June 11, 2012 and will run through Aug. 3, 2012.

Participating teens complete a six hour orientation that includes HIPAA patient privacy laws, infection control, professional conduct and customer service. Each Junior Volunteer is trained and certified to transport patients by wheelchair.

Typically, each teen contributes four to five hours each week performing such duties as escorting patients and guests, wheelchair escort of discharged patients, materials and lab transport, and department-specific duties. At the end of the summer, each Junior Volunteer will be awarded a certificate for the number of hours he or she has contributed.
